Join the community in celebrating Juneteenth in 2022 at activities throughout the week of June 13!
Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is one of two freedom celebrations held throughout the United States; the other is the Fourth of July.
It originated in 1865 and is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. It was on June 19 of that year that Major General Gordon Granger and his troops landed at Galveston, Texas, where they announced – and enforced – President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, which had officially taken effect two and a half years earlier.
